Human Trafficking Survivor Shares Her Story of Isolation and Abuse

“Mindy”, a woman whose name remains private for her own safety, was an adopted foster child that grew up in a small town in southwest Mississippi. She went to a private school and had many friends. A female friend later introduced her to the man that would become her keeper.   “He would show up everywhere I was,” she said. “Just, ‘Hey how you doing,’ taking an interest. But looking back, a part of me was going, ‘How does he know I’m here, how does he know what I’m doing? How does he know these things about me?’” She would later find that this man was a high ranking member in a gang. The man showered Mindy with gifts, such as an apartment that cost more than the one she was living in. After a year of living in the apartment, all while being brainwashed by this man, he started to offer what she called “survival deals”. “And he’s like, ‘Here’s the deal. I’ve got this friend, if you just do this for my friend, we’ll pay for the electric.”said Mindy. She was isolated from her friends and family, spending all her time with the members of her keeper’s gang. Her involvement in the gang soon escalated to moving guns and selling drugs. This went on in numerous states until one night she was pistol-whipped by gang members, she was beaten to the point that doctors had to open her skull to relieve the pressure of her brain swelling. She was able to escape the gang by reaching out to an attorney on twitter. She was then rescued by the FBI and put into a safe house, where she lived with other survivors for a year. Mindy wants people to hear from more victims in order for people to understand just what law enforcement is up against.
